Blank Pages or Missing Content? Audit Your Print PDF

Compare the exported PDF with a simple page map that identifies chapter openings, deliberate blanks, and the final section of the book. A blank page is acceptable only when it has an understood purpose. Investigate unexplained blanks and missing transitions before assuming they are harmless layout artifacts.

Build a short page map

List the expected opening and closing content for each major section. Note any intentional blank pages and why they exist. The map does not need to reproduce the manuscript; it should identify the landmarks that prove the reading sequence is complete.

For example, a workbook might place a reflection page after each chapter. Record whether that page contains instructions, a heading, or deliberately open writing space. Without this distinction, an empty export can look like an intended worksheet and survive a quick visual scan.

Review the export as a sequence

Use the PDF's page thumbnails to scan for unexpected gaps, then inspect the pages on either side. Read the last sentence before a blank and the first sentence after it. A sentence cut in half is stronger evidence of missing content than a page count alone.

Check that chapter openings occur where you intended. Layout choices involving facing pages can create deliberate blanks, but the logic should be consistent. Avoid treating every unexpected blank as necessary simply because some books contain them. Explain each occurrence using the page map and source layout.

Compare suspicious pages with the source

Return to the exact source version used for export. Look for section breaks, hidden objects, overflow text, oversized images, or content assigned to a different page style. Change one suspected cause at a time so you can tell whether the repair worked.

If a page appears empty only in one viewer, compare it in another appropriate viewer and inspect the export settings. Do not declare the file safe based on a single favorable rendering. The submission and reader-facing output need to display reliably, not merely look correct in the authoring application.

Check completeness independently of layout

Count major sections, exercises, illustrations, and appendices against the manuscript inventory. This catches missing material even when the remaining pages form a smooth visual sequence. A chapter can disappear without leaving a conspicuous blank behind.

If the page count changes after a repair, update other production decisions that depend on it, including the final cover handoff.

  • Confirm every chapter has a start and an end.
  • Locate every promised worksheet and appendix.
  • Inspect image-heavy pages separately.
  • Resolve every unexplained blank.
  • Compare the last page with the expected ending.

Keep an approved explanation for intentional blanks

Record intentional blanks in the release notes, especially when collaborators will review the file. A proofreader should know which blank pages are deliberate without having to guess or remove them. Keep the explanation tied to the current edition.

After the final export, repeat the page-map check and the relevant KDP preview. If you order a proof, review the physical sequence too. The goal is not to eliminate all empty space; it is to make sure every page, including an empty one, belongs to the book you intended to publish.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for this publishing decision.

Is a blank page always an error?

No. It can support a deliberate print layout or reader activity. It should have a clear purpose and match the source and page map.

Is matching the page count enough?

No. Two different errors can cancel each other numerically. Check the actual section landmarks and the completeness of important material.

Should I add text saying the page is blank?

Only if it helps this book's reader or review process. Do not add a label automatically when the layout purpose is already clear.

AI use and quality control

What must I check, disclose, and verify myself when AI helped produce the book?

Review facts, rights, and source material yourself, record which parts were AI-assisted or AI-generated so you can answer Amazon’s disclosure question accurately, and treat every automated check as a starting point rather than a verdict.
