Free KDP margin and bleed checker

Find the minimum inside and outside margins for a paperback setup.

Check the gutter for the final page count and see how an interior bleed choice changes outside margins and exported page dimensions.

What does this tool check?

The minimum inside margin increases as page count grows. If any interior page uses bleed, the whole interior file must use the bleed page size and the outside margin minimum increases.

Inputs

Paperback configuration

Use the final interior PDF page count for a production cover. An estimate is useful only for planning.

Result

Your calculated setup

Minimum inside margin

Inputs, calculation, and limits

What you enter
Trim size, page count, and whether any interior page uses bleed.
How the number is calculated
The inside (gutter) margin depends on page count: 0.375 in up to 150 pages, 0.5 in up to 300, 0.625 in up to 500, 0.75 in up to 700, and 0.875 in up to 828. Top, bottom, and outside margins are at least 0.25 in without bleed and 0.375 in with bleed. A bleed interior adds 0.125 in to the width and 0.25 in to the height of every page.
What the result cannot tell you
These are minimums; a readable layout usually uses more. Interior bleed and cover bleed are separate settings: the cover wrap always includes bleed regardless of this choice.
Worked example, computed by the same code as the calculator

A 6 x 9 in paperback, black ink on white paper, 200 interior pages, no interior bleed (KDP rules version 2026-09-07):

  • Inside (gutter) margin: 0.5 in, because 200 pages falls in the 151 to 300 page band.
  • Outside, top, and bottom margins: at least 0.25 in without bleed, at least 0.375 in with bleed.
  • If any page used bleed, every page in the file would be 6.125 x 9.25 in instead of 6 x 9 in.
Official sources for these rulesBoundHive checks these pages and records the date as the rules version shown with every result. Amazon can change its requirements; the rules version tells you which copy was checked.
Format and interior

Which trim size, page count, margins, and bleed setting work together for my paperback?

Check the complete combination first: a trim size, ink and paper type, and page count must be a supported KDP set, and the page count then fixes the minimum inside margin and whether the interior needs a bleed page size.

How BoundHive keeps the answer reproducible

The calculator uses the same versioned specification catalog as Book Studio. It validates the complete option combination before returning a dimension and records the rules date with the result.

Amazon can change requirements. Recheck the final files against the current KDP previewer and official documentation immediately before submission.
