Preflight a Novel's Chapter Openings Before PDF Export

Review a novel's chapter openings as a sequence before exporting the print PDF. Check where each chapter starts, how running heads and page numbers behave, and whether intentional blank pages remain distinguishable from mistakes. Compare the exported file with the approved source and current KDP formatting guidance for the selected paperback setup.

Establish the chapter-opening convention

Choose a chapter-opening style that fits the book and record its parts: heading placement, opening paragraph treatment, running-head behavior, and page-number position. Decide whether chapters may begin on either side of a spread or follow a particular design convention. Do not confuse a design preference with a universal KDP requirement. The selected production specifications and current platform guidance still control the technical file checks.

For a series, compare the proposed convention with earlier volumes if consistency matters to the reader experience. You can improve a weak design, but make the decision deliberately. A different chapter heading in one volume may be harmless, while inconsistent author or series wording in running heads can create a confusing package. Keep a short approved sample that the formatter can use when evaluating the remaining openings.

Inspect the transition into every chapter

Review the final page of the previous chapter, any intervening blank page, and the opening page together. That sequence reveals problems an isolated chapter-start screenshot misses. A manual page break combined with a section break may create an unexpected extra page. A deleted paragraph can move an opening and expose a header that was supposed to remain absent on the chapter's first page.

Use the source application's structural controls to correct recurring behavior where possible. Repeatedly inserting empty paragraphs may produce an acceptable view at one moment but become fragile after text changes. Identify whether the problem belongs to the document style, section settings, or a local exception. Record exceptions explicitly so a later global correction does not undo an intentional opening, such as a prologue with a different presentation.

Distinguish blank pages from missing content

List intentional blank pages and why they exist in the design. Then compare that list with the exported PDF. A blank page between sections may be deliberate, while an empty page in the middle of a conversation may indicate an export or layout error. Check the surrounding text to confirm continuity rather than assuming that every blank page came from the chapter-start convention.

Inspect page numbers and running heads on those pages as well. A page can appear blank in the source view while carrying a small header or footer in the export. Decide what the design intends and verify the actual result at a readable size. If the pattern becomes unnecessarily complicated, simplify the layout before approval. Complexity that has no clear reading benefit can make each later revision harder to proof reliably.

Review front matter and navigation separately

A novel's front matter may use a different presentation from the story pages, so test the transition into the main text. Check title and author wording against the cover and metadata record. Confirm that contents entries, if included, point to the intended chapters after pagination stabilizes. Do not leave a page reference unchanged simply because the chapter title itself did not change during editing.

Keep ebook checks separate from print-page checks. An ebook reader may change type size and display settings, so a print opening convention does not automatically describe the ebook experience. Inspect the ebook navigation and section breaks in a suitable previewer. If the same source produces both formats, record any format-specific settings and test both outputs after a structural change to the shared manuscript.

Approve the exported version and preserve its inputs

Export a candidate file and inspect it outside the source application. Check every chapter opening, all intentional blank pages, and the transitions around front and back matter. Verify the file against the current requirements for the intended KDP format. Keep the export settings and source version with the review record so the approved result can be reproduced when a correction arrives.

If the manuscript changes after approval, identify which openings and page references may have moved. Repeat the affected review and inspect the full export for unexpected shifts before submission. Save the approved PDF with a clear version identifier. The final check belongs to that particular file, not to the general layout template or the memory that the chapter starts looked correct during an earlier editing session.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for this publishing decision.

Are all blank pages in a novel errors?

No. Some belong to an intentional design. Compare the exported file with the documented convention and surrounding text so intentional blanks are distinguished from missing or displaced content.

Should I fix chapter starts with repeated empty paragraphs?

Prefer stable document controls for recurring layout behavior. Empty paragraphs can move unpredictably after edits and make it harder to reproduce the approved opening across the novel.

Does a good print PDF prove the ebook chapter breaks work?

No. Review the ebook separately in a suitable previewer. Print pagination and ebook navigation behave differently, particularly when readers change their display settings.
