Check Series Back Matter Before Publishing Volume One

Review the back matter as part of the finished book, using the actual files prepared for upload. Confirm that reading-order information, sequel excerpts, links, and author details are accurate for the current release. Remove abandoned plans and distinguish available books from work still in development. A correct story file can still carry misleading or unusable material after its final chapter.

Inventory everything after the story ends

Start at the last paragraph of the novel and list each element that follows: acknowledgments, author biography, reading-order page, sequel excerpt, resource links, and other material. Identify the purpose of each item. A series opener may need a clear continuation path, but it does not need every promotional element the author has ever drafted. Remove duplicate invitations and material that no longer supports the current release.

Check the order as a reader would encounter it. A sequel excerpt placed before the novel's conclusion can confuse the boundary between books, while an unexplained chapter heading after the ending may look like missing story content. Give bonus material a clear identity. Record which title and manuscript version supplied it so a later correction can be traced to the right source rather than treated as an isolated page of text.

Verify the continuation promise

Compare every reference to the next volume with the actual publication plan. Check title spelling, series wording, reading order, and whether the book is available, forthcoming, or still an undecided project. Do not describe an outline or a working title as a released book. If a publication date is not settled, use wording that remains accurate without relying on a commitment the author cannot yet support.

Consider an opener that once advertised a sequel called The Winter Gate, while the current manuscript uses The Northern Passage. Search the back matter, excerpt heading, link labels, and image text for both names. Fix the approved wording in all affected locations. A correct main listing does not update text embedded in an ebook or printed in a paperback, so the release files need their own direct inspection.

Check the excerpt as a separate editorial item

Confirm that any included excerpt comes from the intended approved draft. An early sample can contain a character name, relationship, or plot event that changed during later writing. Read it for continuity with the first book and for accidental spoilers about the ending the reader has just reached. Decide whether the excerpt still represents the next volume accurately before retaining it merely because it fills a convenient number of pages.

Review the transition into and out of the excerpt. Label the source volume clearly and avoid presenting a partial chapter as though it were a complete standalone story. If the excerpt is removed or replaced late in production, check the consequences for the print interior and cover inputs. Treat the bonus material as real content with version and production dependencies, not as a detachable advertisement that can change without further review.

Test destinations and format differences

Follow every link in the actual ebook candidate using an appropriate reading or preview environment. Confirm that it reaches the intended destination and that the destination still describes the promised resource or book. Read the visible link wording separately from the address. A working link labeled with an obsolete title can still mislead the reader. Preserve a dated note of what was tested.

For the paperback, check whether a reader can use the information without clicking. A short written address or another appropriate access method may be needed, but test the actual printed-size presentation rather than assuming it is legible. Keep essential reading-order information in the book itself. A reader should not have to visit an external page simply to understand which volume follows or whether an advertised story is required to follow the series.

Approve the back matter with the final files

Compare the author name and biography with the approved publication identity, and remove unsupported claims that entered during promotional drafting. Review current KDP content and metadata guidance where the included material or public statements depend on platform rules. Do not copy an old checklist completion into a new release without examining the content that is actually present.

Record the ebook and paperback file versions reviewed, along with any format-specific differences. If back matter changes afterward, reopen the relevant checks and refresh dependent print assets when necessary. Preserve the approved source material with the release package. This makes later updates manageable and ensures that the continuation invitation readers encounter belongs to the series as it actually exists at the time of publication.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for this publishing decision.

Should a sequel excerpt be checked even if it was reviewed earlier?

Yes. Confirm that it still matches the approved next-volume draft and current series facts. Later revisions can make an earlier excerpt misleading or inconsistent.

Does updating a website fix an outdated title printed in back matter?

No. The embedded wording remains in the book file or printed edition. Review the affected release files and prepare corrections through the appropriate publishing workflow.

Can I advertise a sequel that is still being developed?

Describe its status accurately and avoid presenting uncertain titles or dates as settled commitments. Check the wording again before each submission or material book update.

Format and interior

Which trim size, page count, margins, and bleed setting work together for my paperback?

Check the complete combination first: a trim size, ink and paper type, and page count must be a supported KDP set, and the page count then fixes the minimum inside margin and whether the interior needs a bleed page size.
